Evil is most commonly understood in terms of moral reasoning or religious feeling. Throughout history both of these understandings have failed to protect humanity from evil's influence and its end results: war, genocide and eventual extinction. Both have failed to identify evil's underlying causes and so both have been co-opted to serve its purposes. Moral outrage becomes violent revolution within nations. Religion becomes a cause for war between nations.
Political Ponerology provides the framework of a new science. A science that can isolate the causes of evil within the biological differences of a small percentage of the human population whose minds function so differently from the rest of us that their inner world would seem entirely alien to us if they did not hide it behind a carefully constructed mask of sanity. Without conscience, without remorse, this minority seeks only one thing--power over the rest of us.
Western psychology has identified the less successful portion of this group of people as psychopaths. Lacking the intelligence or self-control to hide their deviant nature they expose themselves by resorting to petty crime and violence. The successful ones, however, rise immediately to the top in corporations, religions, social movements and politics. They attach themselves to any existing ideology and, much like a virus, begin to change it from the inside. The original followers of the ideology continue to believe they are fighting for the same ideas while in fact have slowly become pawns of a power-hungry elite.
Communists believed they were striving for worker's rights while their military fought for global domination.
Germans believed they fought for safety from an invading force while their military committed genocide.
Israeli's believe they fight for survival while the Zionist's commit genocide in Palestine.
American's believe they fight for democracy while their military commits genocide in Iraq.
The psychopaths behind this violence do not understand that their constant push for total domination will lead to everyone's destruction, including their own. They will never understand and they will never care and they will never stop.
Our only hope lies in educating ourselves about these psychological deviants and immunizing ourselves against their influence.
